“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”

Even in the midst of the most challenging times, with a conscious mindset and an effort to dig deeper below the surface, possibilities can still be abundant.  They may be different possibilities than were previously imagined, but they are there nonetheless.  Why is it is so difficult to see sometimes?

The first reason is the biggest reason, and it is fear.  Fear of the unknown is the source of limited greatness in so many opportunities.  Fear of failure, fear of success, fears of all kinds stop most of us in our tracks.   This is normal - it is our primary physical instinct.  It takes our purposeful and deliberate change of thought though, to overcome it.  It is hard, but it is possible!

Anger is often another main reason to hold us from seeing new possibilities.  We often like what we like, and not what some different thing might be.  There is comfort in the known, or in "my way" of doing things.  When this is challenged we defend it and rail against something new mainly because it is different.  For many of us, the will to go deep and understand carefully what may be driving us here is a huge challenge.  Again, it is possible, just difficult without a purposeful focus.

Churchill, and the people he led, certainly faced massive and desperate challenges in their time, especially during World War 2.  His ability to see the long view, and envision the true opportunity in the terribly difficult actions needed proved to be world changing!

Moving past fear and anger, to places where opportunity has room to grow and even thrive takes a strong will and mental agility.  It is like starting a new exercise program - the new use of muscles hurts and is uncomfortable.  But with continued practice, it starts to feel like a true new way of living.  Once it is mastered, the vision of opportunities is unending.
