“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry”

A calling can be hard to understand sometimes.  Why are we inspired to do certain things, and not others?  At times, a drive can be so strong that we follow it because it speaks to us deeply, or because it is a means to something else more profound that we want to achieve.

In this quote, Reverend King reminds us the need to pursue whatever we choose, though, with sharp vision and focus.  To act with full intention.  The calling itself is not the important point, it is the commitment to the call.  Authenticity requires us to fulfill the commitment completely.  If we are not committed, it is likely not our true calling.

The calling does not have to be grand, and some callings are stops along the way to something bigger.  The greatest factor to success is the commitment to the call, which helps to minimize pessimism or distraction, and inspires continued momentum.
