“Be the change you want to see in the world”

Now more than ever, this important message helps us understand that the only true thing that any of us have control over changing is ourselves – our thinking and our actions.  Despite the fact we really, really want others to do something, say something or think something different, we can only get there by first changing ourselves.

While this short quote is often attributed to Gandhi, it is actually a paraphrase of what he said, which is:

“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”

Unfortunately, all too often we miss the chance to be the change because we feel the need to judge someone else or represent them as the barrier.  With careful discipline though, we can see that if we genuinely want to be heard we first need to hear.   If we want someone to be friendly to us, we must first put our hand and heart out in friendship to them.

These are hard things to do, and often it is the threat to our ego that is the true barrier to this difficult work.   But it is important work.  There is much change and growth needed all around us.  There is no better time for each of us to slowly, carefully, be the change and the growth, despite the discomfort.
