“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” (Alice)
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to” (Chesire Cat)
“I don’t much care where” (Alice)
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” (Chesire Cat)

Many people paraphrase this exchange between Alice in Wonderland and the Chesire Cat at a fork in the road as “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”  And this is completely true in our businesses, careers, and lives!

In order to make a decision between alternate paths or actions, there must be a guiding direction if we are to reach any goal.  Otherwise, we are like dust being blown about by the wind or we are making choices of actions that accumulate into nothing while they consume our time and energy.

But wait, you say?! How does this align with focusing on being present and not missing moments, as opposed to over planning?  It is actually completely related.   In the moment of time, when you have the choice to act on what is in front of you versus focusing on some remote concern, it is exactly that central purpose that guides what to do.  If your purpose is clear, the moment is more certain – the payoff more dependable.

When a chance to spend a moment with a child disrupts your thoughts about their unknown future, it is that purpose, of being a present and empowering parent, that guides your actions.  Your purpose is not to be a “worry about every possibility” parent, of course!  This applies in so many business, career and life situations.  And the key is taking the time to have clarity of purpose.

What is the purpose you focus on when you decide which way to go?  What guides you in grasping those moments?  Is it just anything, or is it truly something?  Contact me through wimmovescoaching.com, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, phone, or email for discussion and deeper understanding.
