“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”

There are times when taking the next step or even considering it is painful and unpleasant. Perhaps your legs are crossed and cramped from sitting in one place too long, or you have blisters from a past, painful journey. You just want to rub your feet or stretch your legs before you even think about taking a next step. Maybe you are just too comfortable to move.
These times come for all of us, but the simple fact is that if we are not moving, we are not growing. And if we are not growing, we are stagnating. It certainly may be that we are just resting, and temporary resting is helpful. Long term resting though is stagnating.
Taking that first step forward is the only way to advance, even if it is a tiny step. A baby step will get us closer to a new destination and take us toward growth. It is incremental but it is a forward movement, nonetheless. It will propel our momentum to swinging into a second small step. With more steps we will gain distance on our journey and may even get into the flow of a full stride. Whatever the goal, it is that first step that is crucial.
Maybe its saying that tonight you will skip dessert, or that Saturday morning you will start taking short weekend walks. Perhaps it is looking up the phone number of a long-lost friend or relative, so you can call them tomorrow. Possibly its logging on to LinkedIn and making a long overdue profile update. Or maybe it is starting a conversation with a realtor.
